Wanda McCarthy

McCarthy, Wanda, of Grand Rapids, was born Feb. 27, 1923, and entered into eternal life, at the age of 95, on Feb. 10, 2019. She is survived by her daughter, Margie Jirous, of Marne, and son Patrick (Phyllis) McCarthy, of Missoula, Montana. Faith and family were everything to Wanda, and she is also survived by four granddaughters, who were a great source of pride and, together with their husbands, provided great joy in her life; Kathleen (Joe) Skorka, Molly Ferguson, Kelly (Michael) Hyman, and Sandra Jirous. Also surviving Wanda, are eight great grandchildren, who put the sparkle in her eyes and, as she always said, gave her “something to look forward to”; Joey, Aaron, Jackie, Andy, Jacob, and Adam Skorka; Zackary and Rachel Ferguson, and long time special friend and caregiver, Patrick O’Connor. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and good friends. In addition to her parents, Joseph and Josephine Skowron, Wanda was preceded in death by her husband, Charles in 1983, and brother Joseph Skowron, in 1976. Wanda graduated from Union High School, and Haney Business School. During the four years Charles served in World War II, Wanda saved every letter he wrote, which are a joy now for her family to read, and served as a local air raid warden. In April, 1944, during an army furlough, she married her high school sweetheart. Wanda worked for the Grand Rapids Board of Education for almost 35 years, serving as a school secretary first at Harrison Park, and then Burton Junior High School. During retirement, Wanda volunteered at the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans, was a member of the 32nd Division of the Red Arrow, and traveled extensively with friends. Wanda spent her last year at Covenant Village of the Great Lakes, Lake Mich. Dr., and her family is very grateful for the tender loving care she received, from the compassionate staff. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday Feb. 22, 11:00 am at Saint Mary’s Church, 15164 Juniper Drive., Marne, MI. Visitation will be held one hour prior to Mass and a Rosary will be prayed at 10:30. Burial in Holy Cross Cemetery.
