Steven Wayne Harwood

After a several month valiant battle with cancer, Steven Wayne Harwood, 77, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, August 31st, 2024 while surrounded by his family. Steve was born on May 14, 1947 in Kent City, Michigan to Bernetta and William Glenn Harwood as the fourth of 6 children and after high school, he married Connie Harwood (Mull) and they settled in the Grand Rapids area where they raised their family. Steve’s first major job was manager at the original Studio 28 movie theatre - back when it only had one screen and then after several years, he moved over to the office furniture industry and worked in various capacities at several local companies over the next four+ decades. For anyone that knew him, he always seemed to be working (except Sundays!) and for almost 50 years and right up until he was too sick to work this past July, he maintained his own side business doing raised floor shop drawings for various building projects around the world – starting manually with a drafting board, pencil, and paper in the early 70’s - to becoming an expert in AutoCAD once things went digital. Also, Steve really applied his artistic side to photography, both as a hobby and for ~15 years as a wedding photographer with Connie assisting. If you were at a large function with lots of people with Steve, you could almost certainly expect him to be snapping lots of pictures and talking to everyone. Other hobbies included shooting pool with the family, target shooting and researching prepping and survival scenarios. Steve and Connie were founding members of their church and have been faithfully attending over 50 years and Steve has been a deacon for the last 20. The family would like to thank the church members, pastors, friends, extended family, former co-workers, and hospice nurses for all the support and prayers during the last several months – it has been greatly appreciated and has been a blessing. Steve was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters Gladys, Glenda and Evelyn and grandson Matthew. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Connie, his sons Steve (Yakko), Christopher (Rachel) and Aaron (Michelle) and his daughter Amy Busby (Linda), grandchildren Naomi (Joe), Christine (Josh), Emily (Zach), Brendan, Tony, Megan, Nick, Jake, Mason, Shay, Jake and CeCe and great grandchildren Mila, Joshua, Jack, Stella, Saya and Ben. He is also survived by his brothers George (Rachel) and Gary. As a husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend, Steve was genuinely a good man who was kind to all and will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him. Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 13th at 11 AM (with visitation starting at 10) at Grace Immanuel Church, 860 Peachcrest Ct NE with lunch provided and burial to follow at Blythefield Cemetery in Belmont, Michigan. Visitation will be held Thursday evening September 12th from 6 – 8 PM at the Arsulowicz Brothers Remembrance Mortuary, 3525 Remembrance Rd NW. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Columbia Grace Foundation, a boy’s orphanage in Columbia that Steve and Connie and their church have supported for some time. Checks intended for the orphanage can be written out to “Grace Immanuel Church” and sent to the address above but please indicate “Columbia Grace / Steve Harwood” in the check memo section so that your donation (100% of it) will be forwarded to the orphanage.
