Robert (Bob) Makowski

“Absent from the body, present with the Lord” Surrounded by his loving family, Robert (Bob) Makowski, 79, born on January 21st, 1945, passed away on January 7, 2025, after a long, courageous battle with cancer. Bob was preceded in death by his mother and father, Bernice and Alexander Makowski, his brother Alex and sister-in-law Helen, his brothers and sisters in law, John & Mary O’Hearn, Gene & Dolores O’Hearn, Terry & Dorothy O’Hearn, Thomas O’Hearn, Carole Gunckel and Thomas Newby, Nieces and nephew, Kerry O’Hearn, Amy DeGraaf, and Jeffrey O’Hearn. He is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Susan (O’Hearn); his five children, Christopher Makowski, Jeffrey & Lori Makowski, Janet Makowski (Brian), Allan & Jennifer Makowski and Amanda & Steven Schutter. The grandchildren he adored; Alaina Makowski, Saylor, Alli & Ivy Makowski, Elanor & Rosanna Schutter, Starr and Logan Smith and kids. His sister Patricia & James Griffin, brothers-in-law Steven O’Hearn & Frank Gunckel and sisters-in-law Gerry Newby & Kay O’Hearn. Bob graduated from Catholic Central in 1963, and remained a devout Catholic throughout his life. His faith and love for the Lord were a very significant part of who he was. He had a 37 year career with the United States Postal Service and worked his way up to a PDC supervisory position. He was highly relied on and respected. After he retired, he continued to work as a consultant for the USPS. He traveled all over the country working as a Technical Support Consultant testing new technology for the post office. Later on during his postal career he was also a volunteer firefighter with Oakfield Township. He was an avid Michigan sports fan. He loved the Lions, the Tigers, and was passionate about U of M Football. Bob loved to bowl and was in several leagues for many years. He enjoyed Sudoku, traveling, reading the Sunday newspaper, and he never met a dessert he didn’t love, especially chocolate! Bob dedicated his life to his family. He was a devoted husband to his wife, a loving and supportive father to his children and an adoring grandpa to his grandchildren. He spent many wonderful years attending sporting events, birthday parties, graduations, concerts; the list goes on and on. Anything that involved his kids and grandkids, he joyfully showed up. He was patient, kind and loving and his legacy will live on through the cherished memories he created with his loved ones. The family will greet visitors Sunday, January 12 from 2:00-4:00 PM and 6:00-8:00 PM with a Rosary at 7:00 PM at the Arsulowicz Brothers Remembrance Mortuary at 3525 Remembrance Rd NW, Grand Rapids, MI. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11:00 AM Monday, January 13 at St. Jude Catholic Church at 1120 Four Mile Road in Grand Rapids with a visitation one hour prior at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Make a Wish or the American Cancer Society. Please keep the Makowski family in your prayers. They have lost a husband, father and grandfather whose love knew no bounds. It was a life well lived.
