Mr. Melvin F. Hammond

Mr. Melvin F. Hammond age 89 of Walker went to be with the Lord on January 14, 2015. Melvin was preceded in death by his loving wife of over 55 years, Maxine Frances Blady Hammond, his father David Franklin Hammond, mother Mary Jane Thurkettle, brother James Hammond and two other brothers at birth, great grandson Gabriel Charles Orosz, in- laws Howard and Barbara King and granddaughter Angela Orosz. Melvin excelled in athletics from track to basketball to a 3 Time All City Baseball player for Union High School. Melvin graduated from Union High School and in 1943 he then entered the service with many of his friends. Melvin served with the WWII 3rd Army Engineers; he was honorably discharged in 1946. Melvin met Maxine Frances Biadasiewicz (Blady) and married. Melvin and Maxine celebrated over 55 years of marriage and have three children: Frances (Loren) Godfrey, Steven (Jocelyn) Hammond, Frank (Carol) Hammond, grandchildren: Carie Hammond, Steven (Kara) Hammond II, Laura (Mario) Fagairo, Sara (Corrie) Fredette, Candace Godfrey, Catherine Lynn Hammond, David Anthony Hammond, Abigail Nicole Hammond, great grandchildren: Kora, Tad and Ella Orosz, Haile Rose and Michael Cederquist, Gabriella Hammond, Jocelyn And Mario Fagairo, Mitchell, Michael, Addison and Mason, brothers-in law and sisters-in-law Mike (Judy) Sanders, Patricia (Guy) Estep, many nieces and nephews, and dear friends, Eddie Staskiewicz and Al Mercado. Melvin worked for GM for 34 years and was a member of the U.A.W. 730. Melvin would like everyone to always remember those who served and made the ultimate sacrifice. Never forget our flag and what it means to every American (Freedom), also to the many care givers and special thanks to Holland Home Fulton Manor Van Andel Pavilion for all they have done for him and his family. Melvin would also like all his friends and family to take the time and remember the fun and good times. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday 10:00 am at St. James Catholic Church (due to renovation at St. Adalbert’s) where he will repose one half hour prior. His family will receive visitors Friday 2-4 and 7-9 pm at the Arsulowicz Brothers Remembrance Mortuary, 3525 Remembrance NW where a Vigil Service will be Friday at 7:00 pm. Interment Holy Cross Cemetery. Memorial contributions to Holland Home will be appreciated.
