Jack Henry Witt

Jack Henry Witt, age 94, of Grand Rapids, completed his life’s long journey and entered eternal life on June 3, 2018. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Anna Witt, and his sister Amelia. He is survived by Harriet, his wife of 70 years, along with 5 children, Jack Witt (Carol), David Witt (Laura), Thomas Witt, Nancy Jones (Mark), and Mary VanGessel (Tom), 9 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren. Jack was first and foremost a family man, who treasured his extended family and did his best to keep up with their activities and their achievements. Jack was born and grew up in Muskegon, he attended Muskegon High School, where he was the President of his graduating class, and Muskegon Community College. He entered the workforce as a cost accountant at Continental Motors Corp. in Muskegon. In his early 40’s, he decided to advance his career, returning to school at Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, graduating with a Business Administration degree in 1968. Moving to Grand Rapids with his family, he then worked for Goodrich Welding in Hudsonville, and completed his career back in his native Muskegon, working for Textron’s casting division. Also a deeply religious man, Jack attended St. James Catholic Church in Grand Rapids for many years, where he chaired the finance committee and helped oversee the renovation of the church exterior in the 1970’s. Later in life, he and Harriet moved to Holy Spirit Church in Grand Rapids, where they are still members today. After retirement, Jack also served as a spokesperson for the elderly population of West Michigan as a member and leader of the Grand Rapids AARP chapter. He continued his volunteer work until 2005. A frequent columnist for the newsletter, Jack was an outspoken advocate for the elderly, especially in areas of healthcare and housing. Jack’s life will be celebrated with a Funeral Mass at Holy Spirit Church, 2230 Lake Michigan Drive in Grand Rapids, at 12:00 pm on Friday June 8. Visitors can meet the family an hour prior to the Mass, or at Arsulowicz Remembrance Chapel, 3525 Remembrance Road, in Walker, from 7-9 PM on Thursday June 7. The family requests that any memorials in his name be made to Holy Spirit Church, the Christian Rest Home Foundation, 1000 Edison Avenue, in Grand Rapids or Spectrum Hospice.
