Delores Palmer

Delores Irene (Young), aged 70 passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by family on July 14, 2011. Delores was born on May 5, 1941 to Bill and Ethel Young of Muskegon Heights, MI. Delores is survived by her husband of 51 years Barry Palmer, her children Jean Ann Sampson (Larry), Shawn Renee Young of Grand Rapids, Carolyn Marie Marek (Andy) of Coopersville and Joseph Palmer of Cedar Springs. Delores was blessed with 9 grandchildren, Sarah Mattone, Eric Mattone, Shawna Mattone, Michelle Husen, Kayla Peters, Mitchell Peters, Austin Peters, Alex Campbell and Maddelyn Palmer; 4 great-grandchildren, Ava Lewis, Tristen & Aiden Planck and Sebastian Aguilliar; sisters Karen (Bob) Lindback of Twin Lake, Mary Barrett of N. Muskegon, and brother Bill (Kathy) Young of N. Muskegon; sister and brother-in-law Beverly (Stan) Swears of Twin Lake and Barbara Grennen of Muskegon; many nieces and nephews. Her parents Bill and Ethel Young, sisters Evelyn Wrobel, Virginia Bush and granddaughter Amanda Mattone preceded Delores in death. Delores retired from Grand Rapids Community College after 26 years as an Administrative Assistant. In her early years at GRCC she worked as a secretary to the Dean of Arts & Sciences. The most enjoyable part of her job was working with all the students and the relationships she built with the faculty and staff. When she retired 8 years ago she became a member of the GRCC retirement committee organizing retiree luncheons and newsletters. She also volunteered for many community events; nearest and dearest to her heart was the Kid’s Food Basket. As a 15 year member of the Travelers Protective Association of America Delores became Post President and Divisional State Secretary. Delores played the organ at Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Saint James Catholic Church and most recently for the Veterans Home of Grand Rapids. Funeral services will be held Wednesday 11 am at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church of Marne, where she will repose one hour prior, Father Bill Zink officiating. Relatives and friends may meet the family on Tuesday 2-4 and 6-9 pm at the Arsulowicz Brothers Mortuary Remembrance Chapel, 3525 Remembrance Rd. where a Vigil Service will be held at 7:00 pm. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to Grand Rapids Community College Scholarship Trust Fund, The Traveler Protective Association for Deaf and Near Deaf Scholarship Trust Fund, Hospice of Grand Rapids or Kids Food Basket. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Delores’ Hospice team for all the love and care you gave to our mother and wife. You made her journey to heaven a peaceful one.
