Mr. Theodore J. Totoraitis age 91 of Grand Rapids passed away peacefully on Thursday August 12, 2021. He was preceded in death by his wife Orpha Totoraitis, his sons Theodore Totoraitis Jr. and Douglas Hardin, his grandson Theodore Totoraitis III, his son in law Michael Morgan, and his daughter in law Patricia Hardin. He will be missed by his son Greg Hardin, daughter Nancee Totoraitis; his grandchildren Craig Hardin, Kurt Hardin, Ryan Hardin, Ann Wiersma, Sara Hardin, and Scott Hardin, Jody Lemmen and Mike Buth and Heidi Rabideau and Bret Totoraitis ; many loving great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. Ted was a lifetime resident of Tallmadge Township, born at home and raised on the family farm during a time before telephones and electricity were common. He was a proud first-generation Lithuanian American who often told stories of his childhood on the farm and of his Lithuanian parents (Joe and Mary) and relatives. Agricultural life ran in his veins but he knew more than just farming. Ted was exceptionally talented at motorcycle racing and competed actively in the AMA Flat Track circuit for many years, the highlight of his racing career being a 2nd place finish in the amateur class of the 1949 Daytona 200 on the beach in front of 30,000 fans. Ted also served honorably in the United States Army as a Paratrooper during the Korean War era and then afterwards for a time in the Army reserves. He was multitalented, owning and operating several businesses in the Standale Area, including Grand Valley Honda and a dealership for Allis Chalmers farm equipment. He also operated four cement trucks for Grand Valley Redi-mix for a time. He was skilled at equipment repair and many will have fond memories of stopping to visit Ted on the farm and finding him laying under a piece of equipment in the hot sun or freezing cold surrounded by tools and parts. He worked for several decades in machinery maintenance for HS Die & Engineering until “retirement”. Ted’s working life ended in the same place his life began, where he was happiest, farming on his family’s land along the Grand River until he was 90. Ted will be sorely missed by all who knew him. In keeping with his wishes there will be no public services. Memorial contributions may be made to Fountain View Assisted Living, 620 Randall, Coopersville, MI 49404.
