Chester A. Szczytko

Chester A. Szczytko died on November 1, 2020 at the age of 97. Chet was the last surviving member of a sibship of 13 that spanned almost 117 years. He was a lifelong resident of Grand Rapids who graduated from Union High School, and attended Davis Tech. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II. Chet was wounded twice during the pivotal Battle of the Bulge in December 1944, for which he was awarded two Purple Hearts. In November 1946 he married his wife Trudy and they remained together until her death in 2007. He is survived by his sons Steven, Michael (Jennifer), Mark (Karen), and his grandchildren Ben, Carly, and Rachel. Chet was an avid golfer who could hit it a mile and putt like Tiger, and he continued to play until he was 90. He was a longtime member of St. Mary's Church and the Basilica of St. Adalbert, as well as St. Adalbert's Aid Society, Knights of St. Casimir, Catholic War Veterans Post 1058 and VFW Post 830. A Mass of Christian burial was held on Thursday November 5, 2020 at 11:00 am at St. Mary's Church located at 423 First St. NW. The family received visitors on Wednesday from 5:00-8:00 pm at Arsulowicz Brothers Mortuary, 585 Stocking NW, a rosary was prayed at 7:30 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Church-Our Legacy Fund.
