Make your mark with art!”, was Ann Baker’s motto (wife/mom/sister) as a high school/middle school art teacher of 35yrs at Kenowa Hills School District. She passed away peacefully on this beautiful, sunny Tuesday morning at the age of 75 surrounded by her loving family. Although her last years were physically challenging, there is no doubt she was a strong, independent, caring and thoughtful woman who lived a full vibrant life filled with art, creativity, gardening, love, travel & adventure. After spending her early years enjoying riding horses in the country in Wichita, Kansas; she moved with her parents to Seattle and evolved into a hippy flower child of the 1960s. She left Washington to attend school at Central Michigan University where her aunt was the head of foreign languages, and earned her Master’s Degree in Art & Education. While there, she met her husband John and enjoyed 51+ years building a strong, respectful partnership. They settled in Grand Rapids but traveled extensively exploring the area themselves while also exposing their kids to new opportunities in every corner of Michigan & the USA. In addition to her long teaching career, Ann sold her own art during the summers at numerous art shows/festivals for over 15 years, creating many friendships through the mutual love of art. She earned the title of Master Gardener and loved getting her hands dirty in her exquisite garden filled with amazing peonies, daffodils, and beautiful irises. Ann also looked forward to Wednesdays each week, where she and John volunteered with ‘Garden Angels’ at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, contributing to the maintenance of the colorful landscape. Ann loved spontaneous road trips and jet-setting to reunite with kids, sisters, and relatives out at the family cabin retreat in the Rocky Mountains of Estes Park, CO, or escaping the cold Michigan winters with John to explore the South/Southwest. She will be sorely missed down here but will be happy making her artistic mark up there in Heaven. Ann is survived by her husband, John, her children, Tobias and Molly, her big sister Molly, brother-in-law Azey and children, the children of her deceased older sister Margaret, Keith & Carolyn Baker and children, Larry & Fern Baker and children, and Jack & Pam Baker and children. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Monday November 22, 2021 at 11:00 am at Holy Spirit Church where her family will receive visitors from 9:00 am -11:00 am at church. A huge thank you to Green Acres of Standale Nursing Home for their amazing care. In lieu of flowers, any voluntary donations can be made to the Garden Angel Club of Holy Spirit Catholic Church and Hospice of West Michigan.
