January 9, 1967 - July 12, 2021
Amy Marie Bronkema, age 54, of Grand Rapids, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, July 12, 2021. She is survived by her parents, Dale and Betty Bronkema, her husband and best friend, John Bekker, her five children, Jacob, Matthew, Benjamin, Micah, and Sarah Bronkema-Bekker, her brother, Eric (Jill) Bronkema, and her niece and nephew, Mackenzie and Parker. Amy was a graduate of Coopersville High School and held undergraduate and graduate degrees from Purdue University. She was a licensed professional engineer, working in the field of structural engineering, ensuring that the roads, bridges, schools, churches, and e-commerce warehouses that we all rely upon remain standing for many years. Throughout her life, Amy was a gifted teacher and leader. She coached a fife and drum corps during her college years, led a girl scout troop, and was a youth leader at church. She parented five children, making sure their lives were full of adventure, and coaching them through school homework and hobbies. Amy was very active in Families for International Children, a local support group for internationally-adoptive families. She coached Academic Games in the Grand Rapids area for many years, mentoring children and helping to lead teams to Nationals. Amy was a gifted travel planner. With road trips to Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon, cruises to Alaska and the Caribbean, historically-themed trips to Washington DC and Feast of the Hunter’s Moon, and countless Spring Breaks on the Gulf Coast, Amy ensured that her children, her extended family, and her friends saw as much of the world as they could. Amy was a talented water-color painter, sculptor, musician, and figure skater. She was a skilled culinary artist as well, cooking competitively before turning her talents to preparing amazing meals for her family and friends. She and her husband rebuilt their house and kept seven cars running. Amy could swing a 28 ounce framing hammer, sweat copper pipe, and do brake and body work. Amy was an avid reader and never lost her love of learning new things. If she didn’t already know the answer to a question, she could find that answer quicker than most. Amy brought joy to those around her. She shared her mother’s passion for making people happy and her father’s fearless optimism. She inspired others to do more and be more than they thought they could. Amy enlivened and drew strength from many intersecting circles of friends, including her Frost Friends, MOTS, Trinity Reformed Church, Academic Games, FFIC, and Chi35. At the center of those circles, though, was her family. It was a rare day that all three generations didn’t see each other. Amy loved her children so much. No matter how busy life got, or how many obstacles they encountered, Amy saw her children as unique, interesting, capable people who, like her, made the world a better place. A memorial service will be held Friday July 23, 2021 4:00 pm at Arsulowicz Brothers Remembrance Mortuary, 3525 Remembrance Rd. NW, Grand Rapids, MI 49534. Her family will receive visitors Friday from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made on her behalf to Michigan Radio (support.michiganradio.org) or to a charity of your choice.
