Sister Anthony Cherwinski,

Sister Jane Anthony Cherwinski, OP of Grand Rapids (born Martha Ann Cherwinski in Vanderbilt, MI) died December 16, 2011. She was 90 years old and a Dominican Sister for 70 years. Sr. Jane Anthony was a teacher in Catholic elementary education for 30 years. Some of those years, she doubled as an administrator. Among the schools she served were St. Joseph Schools in Muskegon, Wright, Saginaw and East Tawas; St. John School, Essexville; SS Peter and Paul School, Saginaw. Sister Jane Anthony earned a B.A. degree and an M.A. in religious education from Aquinas College. She also earned a Master's degree in administration from Central Michigan University. After 30 years in elementary education, she redirected her ministry to coordinating and directing CCD classes in several Michigan parishes: St. Michael Parish, Pinconning; St. Frances Cabrini, Vassar; St. Mary, Pinckney and St. Mary Queen of Angels, Swartz Creek where she served from 1982 to 2008. In 2008 Sister Jane Anthony moved temporarily to Flint before finally moving to Marywood in January 2009. In 1976 she had met Cardinal Karol Wojtyla and was photographed with him, while attending the Eucharistic Congress in Philadelphia. Later before leaving Orchard Lake, she was given the opportunity to study the Polish language and culture on summer scholarships at the famed Jugiellonian University in Krakow. She received successive scholarships and her travelogue letters attest to her appreciation of these privileged summers. Sister Jane Anthony is survived by her sister Gertrude Burzynski of Jackson, MI, sister-in-law Rita Cherwinski of Mt. Morris, MI, nieces, nephews, friends and Sisters in her Dominican Community. Sister Jane Anthony will repose at Chapel of the Word, Marywood Health Center, 111 Lakeside Dr. NE, Grand Rapids with welcoming of the Body and the Remembering Service at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 18 at the Marywood Health Center. Visitation will follow the remembering service until 7:00 p.m. A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 4:00 p.m. on Monday, December 19 at the Dominican Chapel/Marywood 2025 E Fulton St, Grand Rapids. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery. Memorials in Sister Jane Anthony Cherwinski's name may be made to the Grand Rapids Dominican Sisters Health Care Fund.
