Scott Steven Smith

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our dear father, Scott Steven Smith, of Grand Rapids, Michigan. His spirit departed us on January 13th, 2025, around 11:55 pm, at the University of Michigan Hospital. He was 66 years old. Scott was one of the most consistent and reliable people in so many of our lives. Our beloved Father, Son, Brother, Friend, Neighbor, Coach, Cousin, Uncle, and Grandfather, lived a gracious life that influenced many. He is preceded in death by his Father, Harold (Smitty) Smith and his sister Cherie Lynn Smith. He is survived by his mother Lorraine Smith, his three daughters Cherie Smith, Anna Smith, Emmaly Smith, his Grandchildren Stella, Kingston, Oliver, and Luna Cortes-Smith, his granddog Winnie, who loved him unconditionally, his Aunt June Geers, his sister Shelly (Ralph) Fahner, and their children Alyssa and Riley. He was divorced from his wife of 25 years, Joan Smith, and considered her and her husband, Gary Covert, close friends. He graduated from Union High School and went on to work his entire 42 year career with Oliver Products and Company where he started as a machinist and finished as a Parts and Service Technician. He made many life long friends while working there, and was able to retire early in 2020 offering him many new adventures. These included a series of trips to Hawaii, which he absolutely loved. He made many memories traveling with his daughters and grandchildren from Traverse City to Disney World. He was able to spend the majority of the year with his mother Lorraine at their lake house in White Cloud. Our Dad was an influence to many throughout the years, whether it was a softball teammate or fellow bowling league member at Lincoln Lanes, player on his basketball team, co-coach with him, neighbor, or member of Robinson Lake association board. He was well known and deeply loved in our Grand Rapids and White Cloud communities. He has always been a person that anyone could go to for support or even just a beer and enjoy a good time. As our Dad always said to us in coaching and in life, “Winning isn't everything, but Wanting to win is…” and he sure wanted you to win. His daughters and grandchildren were his pride and joy, and his support was felt by all of them. After nearly a year of pursuing medical help, to no avail, he was diagnosed with a rare form of Lymphoma less than a week ago. He chose to pursue aggressive therapy after his family got him moved to the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor. He was unable to tolerate the treatment and quickly succumbed to the illness. Please join the family at Arsulowicz Brothers Mortuary at 3525 Remembrance Rd NW Grand Rapids, MI 49534 on Thursday, January 16, 2025 from 2pm to 4pm and from 6pm to 8pm. The family will also receive visitors one hour prior to the funeral service from 10am to 11am on Friday. The funeral service will be held at Fourth Reformed Church at 11am on Friday, January 17, 2025 at 1226 Union NE Grand Rapids MI 49505. We respectfully ask that you do not send flowers, instead reach out to Scott’s family to directly support them. On Friday, after the funeral, you are invited to spend time with the family at Walker Roadhouse from 130-?. It will be open seating near the bar area. Light appetizers will be provided by the family. Let’s give one more toast to Smitty!
