Savannah Cureton

Savannah Duchess Cureton, 92, beloved Mother, Grandmother, Greatgrandmother, Great GreatGrandmother, died Saturday morning, December 15, 2012, at St. Ann's Home, Grand Rapids, surrounded by her loving and supportive family. Born November 15, 1920, in Little Rock Arkansas, she was the only child of Charles and Amelia (Hendrix) Forbes. Savannah had been a training group leader, for a major recording company. Due to severe illness, she was placed on permanent disability retirement, which she was very reluctant to accept. She participated in an active prayer life, including the rosary, the Liturgy of the Hours, and the Sacred Scriptures. For over forty years, she lived the vocation of the cross, having pain every day. She was Solemnly Professed in the Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites (O.C.D.S.) over seventeen years ago. She would often sing both religious hymns and nonspiritual songs, especially with her friends, and enjoyed sharing, from memory, many of the poems, philosophical sayings, hymns she had learned in her youth, as well as the card game, "Dad", with her son. Savannah will be fondly remembered for her passionate love of all things of God, which she shared with others, both in words and action, consistently putting the needs of others ahead of her own. She always had the most sincere and Christ-centered advice, caring deeply about the welfare of those around her. Her generosity and compassion were building blocks for many trusting and warm relationships. She will be lovingly remembered for her love and pride in her generations of offspring. To those who shared in friendship with her, "Thank you!" Your friendship meant the world to her. Also, profound gratitude is extended to Saint Ann's Home, as well as Great Lakes Hospice, for your care and compassion for her. She is survived by her Son, Reverend Anthony Cureton, Granddaughters, Carrie Cureton, Dawn (Michael) Bayè; three great grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren, along with many extended family members, also dear and sincere friends, especially Bud and Helen Schrank and Paul and Carol Jarosch. The first two funeral rites will be at St. Ann's Home. The Vigil for the Deceased will be Tuesday, December 18 at 7PM, with visitation starting a 6PM. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, December 19 at 10:30AM, with visitation one hour prior to the funeral liturgy. Reverend Tony Cureton will be the principle presider.
