Richard Hendges

Richard Hendges, age 85, passed away January 26, 2022 after a brief illness. Richard was born April 18, 1936, to parents Lester and Ruby Hendges on the West Side of Grand Rapids where he lived until he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on November 3, 1954. He married his childhood best friend, Marilyn, on June 28, 1957 and honorably discharged from active duty as a Sergeant in 1958 when he permanently returned to Grand Rapids. A man of commitment, he worked for the Kent County Road Commission for 40 years. Richard and Marilyn traveled all over the country, but had a particular love for New Mexico and Arizona, where they visited often. Richard and Marilyn were avid collectors and antique dealers with a special fondness for Native American art, most of which they acquired during their many trips out west. Richard will be remembered for his sweet tooth, he would often go for a drive in the morning and return late afternoon with mini tarts from Indiana, for his patience (especially with his wife, daughter, 4 granddaughters and his ( "golden child" grandson), his gentleness with animals, for constantly saying "Hay is for horses" and for his love of life in general. Most of all, he will be remembered for his honesty, integrity and quiet strength. He will be greatly missed by his beloved wife of 64 years, Marilyn (Duclos), daughter Kristine Feutz and son-in-law Dale A. Feutz. Grandchildren: Shannon Del Raso, Richelle (Michael) Engle, Dale G. Feutz, Kayla (Libby) Feutz, and Kelsey (Conor) Amick, Great-grandchildren: Ava and Bennett Del Raso, Aubrianna and Brooklyn Engle, Frances Feutz, Dallas Sumerix, Asher Amick and close extended family including Dave Leibson and Patrick Del Raso. The family would like to thank Emmanuel Hospice for ensuring Richard was able to pass with dignity in his home and to thank Health Care Associates for the compassionate care shown to him in his final hours as well as for the continued support and services provided to Marilyn. We are forever grateful that our Dad/Grandpa was able to be home with his Sweetheart. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, February 3, 2022 at 11am at Holy Spirit Parish, 2230 Lake Michigan Dr. N.W. Grand Rapids, MI 49504. Visitation will held at 10am, with a luncheon following the service. In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made to St. Bonaventure Indian Mission and School in New Mexico and The Wounded Warrior Project.
