Merrie DeVoe

Merrie DeVoe, aged 76, left her earthly body and joined her husband, Mick, in heaven August 20, 2018 while on vacation in Rome, Italy. She was born September 30, 1941 in Lansing, Michigan and was preceded in death by her parents Charles and Lillian Sump, brother William Sump and sister Elizabeth (Sump) Samson. Merrie is survived by four children and their spouses: Marcia (Timothy) Visser, Douglas (Jane) DeVoe, Daniel (Jessica) DeVoe and Michele (Andrew) Lussky; eleven grandchildren: Ryan DeVoe, Misty Long, Matisse Loeschner, Taylor Darling, Mark Loeschner Jr, Shelby DeVoe, Ethan Lussky, Landen DeVoe, Olive DeVoe, Ruby DeVoe and Zared Lussky, and two great-granchildren: Lucas and Lillian DeVoe. Also surviving Merrie are many cousins, nieces, nephews and children she informally adopted during her lifetime. She will be remembered for her caring heart, “carpe diem” attitude, quick wit, generous spirit – and her love of life, community, family, history, travel, entertaining, reading, cooking, playing games with friends and family, Michigan State football and basketball, Detroit Tigers baseball and her churches: Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Comstock Park, Michigan and Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Mission, Texas, where she was a very involved member, reader, and Secretary of the Ladies Club. Merrie, a graduate of Sexton High School in Lansing, Michigan, studied Social Work at Grand Valley State University. She was a teacher of Genealogy, co-owner of DEVco Awards, political activist, volunteer for many educational programs, social justice causes, and civic organizations –and was a champion of equal rights, human rights, and peace. She was a defender of the underdog and a friend to the friendless. Merrie made a positive impact on the world; she will be greatly missed by many friends and her family. A visitation at 10:00 am, a memorial mass and remembrance time, 11:00 – 12:45 during which the family would welcome your special memories, will be held on Friday, September 21 am at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Comstock Park, Michigan, with luncheon to follow.
