Maureen Coulson

Maureen Coulson, 61, of Grand Rapids, MI, went home to be with the Lord on July 28th after a nearly five-year courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. There was nothing more important to Maureen than faith, family, and friends. She wore many badges with honor throughout her life, but possibly none more important to her than “Mom” and “Mimi”. Nothing made Maureen happier than getting to cheer on her children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews at athletic events, on the stage, or wherever they might be sharing their talents. She also loved filling her free time going on walks with friends, crafting, gardening, and deepening her understanding of her Catholic faith. She exemplified a life of service in both her professional and personal lives. Maureen was a proud and dedicated registered nurse, spending nearly 34 years working at Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital — a majority of which were with the surgical center. Outside of work, she was happy to share her time wherever and whenever she could. She was an avid volunteer at Holy Spirit School and Parish, as well as at West Catholic High School in a number of capacities. Maureen graduated from Lumen Christi High School in Jackson, MI, in 1979. She continued her education at Grand Valley State University where she received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1984. While at GVSU, Maureen met a number of lifelong friends as well as her husband, Craig. Maureen is preceded in death by her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Bob & Karen Coulson, and nephew, Jimmy Petress. Surviving is Maureen’s loving husband of 38 years, Craig, and their three children Kaleigh, Matthew (Lauren), and Nicholas. She was a proud Mimi to two grandaughters, Kennidy and Palmer. Maureen is also survived by her parents Jerry & Mary Jo Kelly, siblings Tim (Cathy) Kelly, Chris (Michelle) Kelly, Marty (Pam) Kelly, Mike (Amy) Kelly, and Kate (Chris) Bies. Additionally, Maureen is survived by in-laws Chris (Tami) Coulson, Kim Coulson, and many nieces and nephews. Maureen’s family would especially like to thank her caregivers who assisted with her health battle including Dr. Chandana, Samantha Burgess, Dr. Wright, Dr. Siripong, Dr. Zakhour, Dr. Wong, and Dr. Barber. They would also like to recognize all of the nurses, techs, and schedulers who in any way, great or small, impacted the tremendous care she received. They were instrumental in contributing to her valiant fight. Additionally, the family would like to thank Maureen’s former co-workers who supported her physical and emotional care while in and out of the hospital. Lastly, the family would like to recognize the Saturday morning rosary group who faithfully prayed for the healing of Maureen and many others who were in need of miraculous intervention in their health battles. The family will receive visitors Thursday, August 3rd, from 4:00 pm - 6:30pm at the Arsulowicz Brothers Remembrance Mortuary (3525 Remembrance Rd NW, Walker , MI 49534). A Rosary will then be prayed at 6:30pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, August 4th, at 11am at Holy Spirit Parish (2230 Lake Michigan Dr NW, Grand Rapids, MI 49504). The family will receive additional visitors one hour prior to the mass. Interment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery at 2pm following the funeral. As a fierce advocate of Catholic education, memorial contributions to the Holy Spirit Educational Foundation will be appreciated or to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
