Matthew D. Potts

With profound sadness Matthew D. Potts age 52 of Coopersville passed away after a short painful battle with stage 4 lung cancer on Friday June 27, 2025. He will be lovingly missed by his wife Lisa M. Potts (May); his children Madison, MJ (Matthew James) and Bryson; his parents James and Bette (Walton) Potts; his siblings Mike (Rhonda) Potts, Aaron (Karla) Potts and Marie (John) Geerlings; father and mother in law James and Edna (Gross) May; sisters in law Theresa (Steve) Steffes, Cheryl (John) Harrison; brothers in law Tim (Ruth) May, Jimmy (Sooz) May; his family at Vortec, many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by Lisa’s brother Brian May. Matt graduated from Coopersville High School in 1990. His many years of working on the family hog farm with his dad (Jim) and brothers Mike and Aaron taught him that things don’t come easy. You have to work hard for what you want. Later he received his bachelor's degree in Product Design Engineering from Ferris State University in 1995. Matt graduated at the top of his class. Today he is on the Ferris State Mechanical Engerineering advisory board. He started his career at Lowell Engineering (Magna) and eventually started his own business Vortec Tooling Solutions in 2005. This year marks the 20th anniversary of Vortec Tooling Solutions. He always said, “You only have one chance to be young and learn a lot”. He wants to continue the business on through his legacy and hopes that one day his children will take it over. On May 1st, 1998 he married his loving wife, Lisa. Matt and Lisa stood by each other's sides through the good and the bad. After getting married they travelled the world for 10 years before having Madison, MJ, and Bryson. Matt would always push Madison to be the best version of herself and told her that she could do anything that she put her mind to. He taught MJ and Bryson so many lessons such as how to hunt, fish, fix things, and overall, just be good kids with morals and values. Family meant everything to Matt. Whether it was going for a walk or eating family dinners it was important for him to spend family time. Matt made sure to go to church every weekend with his family, and he prayed with the kids every night before bed. As he progressed through life his Catholic faith grew and became strong. He enjoyed fishing, each year he would take an annual fishing trip to Canada with his dad (Jim), brother Mike, MJ and Bryson. He also enjoyed hunting specifically rabbit, pheasant and elk. He went to North Dakota over Thanksgiving each year with his dad, sons, friends and bird dogs. Matt liked to travel out west and do lots of hiking and sightseeing. He coached sports, did taekwondo, played pool and cards with friends. His motto was “Work hard, Play hard”. He always put others first and was a very forgiving person. He always told the kids to, “think before they do, so they don't hurt others or themselves”. He thought that everyone deserved forgiveness and kindness. The Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday July 3, 2025 at 11:00 am at St. Francis Xavier Church, Conklin, where he will repose one hour before the Mass. Interment St. Francis Cemetery. After mass there will be lunch to follow planned at St. Vincent de Paul Hall in Conklin. His family will receive visitors July 2, 2025 Wednesday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 9:00 pm at the Arsulowicz Brothers Remembrance Mortuary, 3525 Remembrance Rd NW with the Rosary being prayed at 8:30 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to Nathan Syrek Memorial Fund in honor of Matt Potts.
