Mary Margaret Elderkin

Mary Margaret Elderkin peacefully went to be with her Lord and Savior on the morning of February 26th 2023. Mary was born on the 27th day of November in 1944 to Edward and Madeline Schmiedicke in Grand Rapids, MI. She is survived by her two daughters, Marcy Swanson and Katie Elderkin Cason, her grandchildren Alissa Gubelman, Ben Swanson and Dylan Swanson, her sisters, Donna Stelzer, Rita Short, Linda Camp, Ruth Mason, Sue Kloostra; her brothers Bill (Nancy), Paul (Lorna) and Tom (Candy) Schmeidicke and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Mary and Ed Elderkin enjoyed 25 years together, raising their two daughters. Mary had a kind, giving spirit and devoted her time to Holy Spirit Parish and Casey’s food kitchen downtown. Motherhood was Mary’s main passion but when the children were older Mary began a venture of her own in antiques. She owned and operated Mary’s Used Furnishings on Leonard Street for over 10 years and loved the challenge. Even in retirement Mary couldn't stay away from a good bargain and started reselling her thrift finds at a booth in Warehouse One Antique Mall. Family and faith meant everything to Mary. She attended mass at Holy Spirit every Sunday and always kept her rosary nearby. Mary’s closest confidants and friends were her sisters. Whether it was planning large family gatherings or their next trip to Vegas, the bonds they all shared were loving and lifelong. Mary was more affectionately known as Aunt Mary by her many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, who she always supported in their endeavors and encouraged to follow their dreams. Mary was a devoted grandmother to her three grandchildren whom she showered with all the love only a grandmother can give. Mary will be remembered for her loyalty to her faith. Her contagious laughter that could fill a room. Her quick, witty humor that always kept you on your toes. Her kindness to friends and strangers alike. Her unwavering support to anyone who needed it. Her charitable spirit. Her steadfast love for family and God. Most of all, Mary will be remembered through her family, friends and loved ones. They will carry her memory on through good deeds, stories of fond memories and laughing to keep her spirit with us. The Memorial Mass will be celebrated Saturday March 4, 2023 at 11:00 am at Holy Spirit Church, 2230 Lake Michigan Dr. NW. Her family will receive visitors at the church from 10:00 to 11:00 am. Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Spirit Educational Foundation.
