Martin J. Paauwe

Martin J. Paauwe, age 93 of Grand Rapids entered into eternal life on May 30, 2019. He is survived by his daughter Kathi (Michael) Lynch, grandchildren David, Rachael and Ryan Lynch, his son James Paauwe, grandchildren Nick and Mitch Paauwe, his son-in-law James Shumake and granddaughter Kaley Shumake and dear friends Raymond and Yiselle Kusto. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Anne of 61 years who he nursed through Alzheimers for over a decade, his son Michael, and his daughter Diane whose side he never left while she battled cancer. He is also preceded by parents Martin and Jeanette Paauwe, his sisters Betty, Margie and June and his brothers Gerald and Lawrence. He was one of six children, born to Dutch immigrants, one of the last of the greatest generation, growing up on a small farm with very modest means during the depression on the west side of Grand Rapids. His passion as a youngster was helping on the farm, getting his chores done so he could play baseball. He proudly served in the United States Army during WWII and upon his return would become a builder, a line surveyor and Manager in the industrial paint business. He was fiercely and deeply devoted to his wife and children, his country and his faith in God. He is best remembered for his service and devotion to others, both abroad with Mercy Ships, in his church EACRC, where he spent 68 years as a member, his Port Sheldon beach community where he was always working on a project and most recently with Gildas Club. He especially enjoyed spending time fishing with his buddies Jay and Al and golfing with anyone that wanted to swing a club. He could be found in his late eighties golfing as many rounds as he could get in before dark. His secret to a long life was tenacity, faith, love and service to others. His family will receive visitors Monday, June 3, 2019 from 5-8 pm at the Arsulowicz Brothers East Mortuary, 937 Michigan Street, Grand Rapids 49503. A Memorial service will be held Tuesday, June 4th, 2019 at 12:00 (Noon) with visitation one hour prior at Eastern Ave. Christian Reformed Church, 514 Eastern Ave, Grand Rapids, 49503 officiated by Rev. Thea Leunk and Rev. Steve DeRuiter. Light Luncheon to follow. In lieu of flowers please make donations to Gildas Club of Grand Rapids.
