Mrs. Jane Marie Voss (Thrall)

Mrs. Jane Marie Voss, devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great grandmother, aged 90, was welcomed into Heaven on October 21, 2023. She was preceded in death by the love of her life, husband Hugh; granddaughter Kristin Rosloniec; daughter Cheryl Wollard; son-in-law David Rosloniec; son-in-law Robert Jester; son-in-law William Hegarty; parents Russell and Esther Thrall; and sister Kathleen Milett. Jane is survived by her children Cindy Rosloniec, Terri Hegarty, Judy (Bob) Everett, Anne (Dan) Miller, Shelly Hogle, and Joe (Heidi) Voss; 17 grandchildren: Jason (Carissa) Rosloniec, Andrew (Andy King) Jester, Adam (Beth) Jester, Chris (James) Crandall, Jane (Brian) McConnell, Beth (Rick) Thurkettle, Katie (Calvin) VanEck, Robby (Kayla) Everett, Melissa (Jyronn) Manning, Michael (Nicole) MacEachron, Jake (fiance’ Paula-Marie Ferrara) Patin, Jessie (Steve) Markus, Brandon (Jennifer) Hogle, Erika (Joe) May, Taylor Hogle, Cody (Lauren) Voss, and Jacob (Jordan) Voss; 33 great-grandchildren (“Greats”): Jason Pressnitz; Jonah and Rachel Jester; Connor and Ellie Crandall; Brendon (Taylor) McConnell, Jason (Jocelyn) McConnell; Cora, Brayah, Gabe and Ashton Thurkettle; Leah, Jack and Ruby Armstrong; Zen Everett; Makenzie, Cassie and JJ Manning; Garrett and Levi Markus; Desirae, Braxton, Carter, Dominic and Adalynn Hogle; Braylon, Alivia and Jalen May; Kaiden, Paisley, Lonno and Abrielle Hogle; and Emma Jane Voss; and 2 great-great-grandchildren: Millie and William McConnell. Also surviving are Jane’s siblings, James (Cynthia) Thrall and Mary-Ann Carpenter and many nieces, nephews and friends. Jane was absolutely beloved by all who met her. It was an undeniable privilege to know and love Jane, for she was a constant outpouring of joy from her younger years until her last breath. Jane, the eldest of four children, was born at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan on Wednesday, January 18, 1933. Jane had health complications as a baby and thus her life began with the fighting spirit she was known for. Jane fondly remembered her childhood – visiting the theater with her father who played the organ, tending to her siblings and being the first home on Auburn SE to have a television! Jane attended St. James and St. Thomas Catholic schools. She graduated from Marywood Academy in 1950. During Jane’s junior and senior years of high school, she worked after school at St. Mary’s Hospital in the lab. Following high school Jane worked for dentist Dr. Fiebig through her early years of marriage. Jane loved to tell the sweet story about how she met Hugh Voss, “the love of my life.” On April 15, 1949, Hugh attended her mother’s birthday party, where her Uncle Ed and wife Barb (Voss) attended. Jane met Hugh by asking him to tap the keg of beer. He teased and helped. They ended the night with a walk. Hugh came over almost every night after that day. Hugh and Jane married on June 28, 1952. From 1954 to 1968, Hugh and Jane welcomed seven children to their family: six girls and then (finally) a boy! Jane was a devoted and loving mother. Her children remember fondly always being so proud of her fashion, her beauty and her magnetic personality. When all the children were in school, Jane worked as a bookkeeper in the accounting department at Herpolsheimer’s department store in downtown Grand Rapids. In later years, Jane worked as a hostess at The Athletic Club in the Old Kent Bank Building in Downtown Grand Rapids. Jane also volunteered as a member of St. Mary’s Church Altar Society, worked at The Westside Apostolate Thrift Store, and was an Election Precinct Inspector for the City of Grand Rapids. Jane was most proud of her years spent as a full time homemaker while growing her family. The Voss home at 33 Valley Avenue on the Westside of Grand Rapids was always bustling. Jane loved hosting family and friends — serving her famous dishes (Sloppy Joe barbeque, chop suey and Frankie’s kielbasa). Hugh and Jane hosted Notre Dame football game parties from their living room for generations of family members. Jane was always a proud ND fan and huge sports enthusiast. Jane’s weekends in the1990s and 2000s were spent attending many of her grandchildren’s sporting events. Into her elderly years, Jane continued to be an avid sports fan, always yelling to the athletes, “DO IT!” Jane was both the anchor and energetic heartbeat of the large Voss family. She loved to sing and dance. Jane’s joy was contagious. Everyone who knew Jane could always count on her to patiently listen, offer praise and heartfelt encouragement. Her family will miss her lipstick kisses, candy treats and very long goodbyes at the door. Jane’s mark on her family will continue through generations, each member hoping to be even slightly as magnificent as Jane was. Through Jane’s 90 years, her Catholic faith guided her. Jane was a staple parishioner at St. Mary’s Parish for many years. She loved to pray the rosary and discuss her favorite Saints. In 2016, Jane moved to St. Ann’s Home, where she enjoyed attending daily Mass, participating in their many activities (especially the musical ones) and making many new friends. The Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 28, 2023 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 423 First St. NW, Grand Rapids, Michigan. Friends may meet family at Arsulowicz Brothers Remembrance Mortuary, 3525 Remembrance Road NW, Walker, Michigan on Friday, October 27, 2023 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. or 7:00-9:00 p.m. and Interment at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. The family would like to extend special gratitude to the Carmelite Sisters and the caring, loving staff of St. Ann’s and Emmanuel Hospice.
