Harriet M Witt

Harriet M. Witt, age 97, of Grand Rapids, completed her life’s long journey and entered eternal life on October 16, 2022. Harriet was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Jack H. Witt, her parents, Ward and Thelma Hansen, and her sister Erma. She is survived by her sister JoAnn , her 5 children, Jack Witt (Carol), David Witt (Laura), Thomas Witt, Nancy Jones (Mark), and Mary VanGessel (Tom), along with 9 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. Harriet was born in Grand Rapids, but moved to Muskegon when she and Jack were married. They began their life together in 1948, and it continued until his death in 2018. Moving to Grand Rapids with their children in 1965, she focused on raising their five children and enjoying her many friends in Western Michigan. As the extended family grew in the 80’s and 90’s, family life centered around Jack and Harriet’s home, which she maintained with great care. Harriet and Jack attended St. James Catholic Church in Grand Rapids for many years, until, later in life, they moved to Holy Spirit Church in Grand Rapids, where she remained a member until her passing. Harriet was primarily a mother and housewife, who loved all her children and their extended families. Her favorite activity was walking with husband Jack. She and Jack were also avid travelers. While their children were home, they took 2- and 3-week family summertime trips by car to the Eastern and Western U.S. Later in life, both would travel around Michigan and on occasion, to Las Vegas. Harriet loved to knit, and completed numerous projects which were given to children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed a good night of Bingo with friends, in addition to visiting them and inviting them over for friendly visits. Harriet’s life will be celebrated with a Funeral Mass at Holy Spirit Church, 2230 Lake Michigan Drive in Grand Rapids, on October 26 at 11 AM. Visitors can meet the family an hour prior to the Mass. There will be no other visitation. The family requests that any memorials in Harriet’s name be made to the Edison Christian Foundation, 1000 Edison Avenue, in Grand Rapids.
