Dave Schatner

Dave Schatner age 77, born December 6, 1939 passed into heaven on Monday November 20, 2017. Preceded in death by his parents Robert and Lucille, his sister Marilyn Autry, and brothers-in-law Ken McClurken and John Berg. Surviving are his loving wife Pat, Son David, Daughters Amy Smith and Sharon Schatner (Andra Ward) and beloved Grandaughter Nina Smith, with whom he had a special bond. Also brother-in-law Bob Berg (Joan), sister-in-law Rosemary McMclurken, brother-in-law Ken Berg (Angie) and many loving nieces and nephews. Always the early bird, in true form he exited this world when he was ready. Dave’s journey with cancer was short, courageous and met with dignity and humor. Upon graduation from Catholic Central High School in 1957, he entered the Navy where his training and aptitude helped prepare him for an outstanding career with the FAA, where as an air traffic controller, he earned many recognitions for his superior performance, including being credited for preventing a plane collision. Dave was not only smart but also wise, many relied on his advice. Always generous with his time, he drove for Meals On Wheels for 20 years. After retirement, driving a bus for Catholic Secondary Schools enabled him to overlap his love of sports with his love of children, as he transported teams to many sporting events. He loved to watch the students grow and change over time. In addition to being a most loving and generous husband, father and grandfather, he was drawn to animals of all kinds. Whether it was his beloved dogs, the turkeys and deer who came to drink at the creek behind home, or the birds at the bird feeder, he never met an animal he didn’t love. He drew much comfort and strength from his deep catholic faith. Dave had an affable and caring nature and was famous among his friends and family for his one liners, which he will now be sharing in heaven. Even in our sorrow, our hearts are filled with gratitude. We know how blessed we are as a family for the many joyful moments we’ve shared. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday 12 (Noon) at St. Anthony of Padua Church where he will repose one hour prior. His family will receive visitors Friday 2-4 and 6-8 pm at the Arsulowicz Brothers Remembrance Mortuary, 3525 Remembrance NW. A Rosary will be prayed Friday 7:30 pm.
