Daniel Keith Gerke

Daniel Keith Gerke, Sr., age 65, entered Heaven’s gates on Wednesday January 23, 2019. He was born January 27, 1953 to Herbert and Bertha Gerke in Grand Rapids, Michigan and happily lived his entire life there. Dan received a drum set from his dad when he was 12 years old which began his lifelong love of music and performing. He was a talented musician, he often referred to himself as “the Fastest Hands in the West” and would then drum on his thighs to prove it. Through music he met the girl of his dreams when he was just 17 years old. What a lucky guy! He loved her so much. Dan passed his musical talent on to his children and his grandchildren. Dan had an unwavering faith in God. He was dedicated to the church; he faithfully attended mass every single week, he made a tour of all the local Catholic Churches and even sought out services when he was out of town. Dan loved sports! He was the coach of the year for his many softball teams, he played the position of pitcher and even made cameo appearances as a baserunner. He always gave credit to “his guys” for the win and took the blame for each loss. He coached and played basketball. He was on bowling teams. His grandsons even got him out on the ice to skate. He loved every second of it. He loved to read books, volunteer at the food truck, and watch movies - never without a bucket of popcorn and a bag of plain M & M’s, of course! Dan LOVED, LOVED, LOVED his family. He was so very proud of every accomplishment of every child and every grandchild. He personalized each one of their victories as his own, making them so much sweeter. He was never without a smile. He was loved by all around him. Dan had a kind heart, a very happy disposition, and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. He was truly a great man and if you knew him, you know. If you didn’t, we’re sorry for your loss. Dan is survived by the woman of his dreams who he married 47 years ago, Darlene (Swain), his children Daniel, Jr., Jennifer (Dion Green), Phillip (Alicia), Julie Brigance (Marc), and Matthew (Sarah Perry). He leaves behind his 14 enamored grandchildren: Colin Gerke, Quentin Gerke, Arrenda Brigance, Gloria Brigance, Zoe Gerke, Charlie Gerke, Kieran GerkeGreen, Ellie Gerke, Samatha Brigance, Cohen Gerke, Keagan GerkeGreen, Madelyn Gerke, Calvin GerkeGreen, and Canaan GerkeGreen. Dad/Grandpa: You always said “I love you.” We responded “We love you too.” You countered “I love you more.” To which, of course, we answered, “We love you bestest!” You finished with “Dough!” We will carry the memory of you in our hearts and our minds forever and ever. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 11:00 am at St. Alphonsus Church where he will repose one hour prior to the Mass. Interment will take place at Resurrection Cemetery. The family will receive visitors Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9pm at the Arsulowicz Brothers East Mortuary, 937 Michigan St NE where the Rosary will be prayed Sunday at 7:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the causes that meant the most to him: Right to Life and Catherine’s Care Center. And take every opportunity you get to hug your husband, dad, grandpa, in-law, friend, local musician and weekend warrior. Rest in peace.
