Donald (Don) Carl Longcore

Donald (Don) Carl Longcore, aged 69, of Marne, MI, passed away at home with his family by his side after a grueling yet courageous 7-month battle against Merkel cell carcinoma. Don was preceded in death by his baby brother, Roger, his father, Walter Longcore, his parents-in law, Lorna and Raymond Sweers and his sisters-in-law, Deana Sweers Novakoski and Alice Cain. Don is survived by his wife and soulmate, Beth (his “Bethie”) of 48 years, his two loving children: Celia (William) Knox and Craig (Caitlin) Longcore and his grandchildren Gianna, Connor, Evan, Veronica and Logan, who kept him young and light-hearted. Other beloved family members include his mother, Clara Longcore, his siblings: David Longcore, Susan (Steven) Huizenga, Mark (Susan) Longcore, Walter (Tammy) Longcore, Jeanne (Bill) Gorton and siblings by marriage: Terry (Deana) Novakoski, Raymond (Valerie) Sweers, Douglas (Alice Cain) Sweers, Alan (Carolyn) Sweers, Leanne (Rodney) Mackay and Laureen Sweers. He will be missed dearly by his many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Don was a long-time employee of the Kent County Correctional Facility, where he retired from his role as a Maintenance Supervisor. A hard worker in all aspects of his life, he’ll be remembered for everything he did for his family. It was a joy to have him as ours. Always reliable, genuine, mellow and good-natured, Don was liked by all who were lucky enough to meet him. We will think of him fondly each time a good thunderstorm rolls through, when we travel up north to vacation, when the crisp air of autumn arrives and when we drive by a beautiful golf course. We will pass on your inscrutable sense of humor to future generations so that your skill for making a great joke is never lost. We’ll crank up the volume when all the great classic rock songs come on the radio. We’ll miss you each day and each special holiday, especially Thanksgiving, which you loved for its simplicity, good food and football. We’ll be sure to have the Detroit Lions game on and when they finally get that Super Bowl win, we will cheer thunderously for you. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, July 27 at 11:00 AM at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Comstock Park. The family will receive visitors Wednesday, July 26 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Arsulowicz Brothers Remembrance Mortuary, 3525 Remembrance Rd. NW, and one hour prior to the Mass at the Church. A Celebration of Don’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to American Cancer Society or Gilda’s Club in Grand Rapids.
